Spinel is a gemstone that for over 1000 years was mistaken for ruby and sapphire. It is an oxide mineral often found in octahedral crystals. It is usually found as crystals in limestones and dolomites that have been subjected to contact metamorphism, in irregularly-shaped grains in basic igneous rocks or as water-worn pebbles in silt deposits; often in marble.
