Stalactites are calcite formations that take millions of year to form, dripping down from the roof of a cave. Stalactites form when mineral rich water is also dripped from the roof of the cave down the calcite formation. As the water drips, over many years, the crystals grow. The water, which carries the minerals, affects the coloring.
